I love overlays. I believe that they can add real depth and texture to a sketch or photograph, and gradually, they have been becoming a part of my every-day editing process.
I began with this charcoal sketch (I tried to mix in some cubist-esque shapes, using contrasting shading:)
However, i thought it was too boring. Let the editing begin!
I put on multiple overlays (3), cross processed the colors, and tinted the lips. Voila!
In my opinion, overlays, when used right, can make anything 10x more interesting.
At least 10X more interesting! Your instincts regarding color are strong, full of impact and feeling, in my estimation.
Thanks so much! The thing i love about the overlays on charcoal is the color–beginning with black and white and building on layers.
